Using Site Columns

Site columns are list components that are available at the site level you are currently on and below. They are also a major component of SharePoint and Microsoft has built many that are used all over in the system.

When planning your SharePoint deployment it’s extremely important to consider what types of data you will be reproducing on the site over and over again.  Often times we will make list columns inside of lists throughout our sites that contain similar or identical data to other list columns. Typically this data is something that changes from time to time, which means when that data change needs to be made, we must do so everywhere that column exists. Let’s say for example I create a list column called employees. This list column exists in one list, and also in several others. When we hire a new employee or lose an existing employee, all of these lists have to be updated individually. This is exactly what site columns were made to prevent, with them you can update a single site column and all the lists were they are in use are updated at the same time.

Site columns are easy to make, easy to use and easy-to-manage. When deployed properly throughout SharePoint will they can save massive amounts of time.
